The city’s unique beauty was enhanced when Lake Cherful was built next to its first lake, Lake Garret. Lake Cherful was constructed in 1951 over Oscar Burrell’s cornfield, which was located in both Cherokee and Fulton counties — thus the name Lake Cherful. The small white house where Oscar Burrell lived still exists on the Cherokee county lakeside. The city of Mountain Park has been designated a wildlife refuge to protect the many species of animals that live there.

Most of the streets on the south side of the lakes (the older part of the city) are named after trees such as Cedar, Maple, Spruce, etc. Most streets on the north side are named after birds, like Robin, Thrush and Cardinal. The City also includes a foothold into Cherokee County, represented by Cardinal Cove and Blue Heron Drive.
